Ceramics

Jared Seletsky

Jared Seletsky began studying and practicing ceramics at the age of six, drawn early to the material’s physicality and technical demands. What started as a childhood interest quickly grew into a serious commitment; by his teenage years, he specialized in wheel throwing, dedicating significant time to refining his technique and mastering the nuances of form and balance. He expanded his practice to include hand-building, slip casting, and mold making, exploring a wide range of processes and examining how each method shapes both the final object and the maker’s interaction with the medium.

During his undergraduate studies, Seletsky immersed himself in ceramics, investigating the material not only as a craft but also through anthropological and material science perspectives. He developed a deep interest in the cultural history of clay and its physical properties, from translucency to surface texture. His studies took him to Japan, where he explored traditional pottery practices and witnessed firsthand how ceramics integrate into daily life and cultural heritage. These experiences broadened his understanding of the medium’s power to bridge functionality, tradition, and contemporary artistic expression.

After earning his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramics and Glass, Seletsky served as studio manager and lead craftsperson for renowned artist Roberto Lugo, overseeing a team of six. He balanced creative vision with technical precision, managing complex projects in a highly collaborative studio environment. Throughout his career, Seletsky has maintained a commitment to both innovation and tradition, sustaining an ongoing dialogue between control and surrender and honoring the transformative nature of the medium.
