Jared Seletsky’s time in Mexico City represented an immersion into a place of striking contrasts—a city defined by both beauty and disorder, where vibrancy and chaos coexist in constant motion. The intensity of daily life, at once invigorating and overwhelming, revealed to him the limitations of language in fully conveying the depth of such an experience. Under the mentorship of artist Valerie Campos, Seletsky was encouraged to dismantle personal barriers and engage more deeply with his emotions, both in his artistic practice and in life. Through painting, he discovered a means of channeling the turbulence surrounding and within him, transforming it into tangible works that provided clarity and expression.
For Seletsky, the canvas became a vital space where the complexities of change, the rhythm of the city, and his own internal evolution could intersect and unfold. His participation in Vaivén—a platform dedicated to advancing contemporary Mexican art through outreach, promotion, education, and cultural development—offered him the opportunity to cultivate this work within a collaborative artistic community. This experience deepened his understanding of how art serves not only as a personal outlet but also as a reflection of the cultural and emotional landscape of a particular place and time.
